the "Do-OVER"

Rememeber when you were growing up and got to call "do-over". Like in kickball-- the first time is just practice. Pretty much you said it any time things didn't turn out just the way you wanted them to. Your childhood friends usually obliged (so you were sure to reciprocate the "DO-OVER" for them) I sometimes wonder what life would be life if it had a do-over button-- Everyone likes to moralize and say- "hey I wouldn't change a thing" or "if I were to go back I would do it all the same again"- can anyone honestly say that??? Not me I have done some silly things, some medicore things and some flat out stupid things. So I'd like to get a do-over now and then. Hindsight is glorious- but sadly its hindsight- but if we could have it as foresight -- hmmmm... We learn from our mistakes and we press on but it's not to say we wouldn't be better without them.

And as long as we are on the subject of revisionist history-- what if you could go back and see where those other paths would have taken you (yes waxing all robert frosty on you here- although it's not always the road less travelled just a fork in the road) just curious what would happened if you went to a different school, had a different major, had a different college roommate, married someone else, bought a different house, took a different job... sometimes i wonder (yes waxing all It's a wonderful life and back to the futurey now)

I love my life, I love what I have, but I wonder what other stories my life could told had I chosen other paths.

Oh, I agree, forget that "I would do it all the same bit". Because honestly? I learned a thing or two that I would rather not have learned the hard way. And I think it is in our nature, as people to wonder the "what if" stuff.

I often wonder the same thing. I am happy with my life, but where would I be with a different decision?

A bishop of ours when we were in college compared our decisions to the trajectories of bullets. How seemingly small differences in decisions can have a huge impact on the path our lives take. Your post also reminded me of those "Choose your own adventure" books I used to read as a kid. If you read them, you probably went back and read all the different possibilities, didn't you?

I actually think lot about how differently my life would have turned out if I had gone to Rice instead of BYU or married Josh instead of Andrew, etc., etc. i alwasy come back to my curretn life feelingmuch happer and very relieved I made the decisions I did... doesn't change the small things I wish I could "do over" along the way, though!

Sometimes I can really freak myself out wondering how I did actually end up where I have. It would have been so easy to had a very different life than I do. I am grateful everyday that it has turned out great so far!

I do like to sit and think about how the littlest choices can effect my life, for example, the neigborhood where we decide to live. That determines a lot of our friends, my kids' friends, and there for our social lives, and if we had just picked a different place, our lives would be different.

I'm with you on the what if is natural. Makes for good movies like "Family Man"

Thanks for the comment over on my blog. Obviously you live pretty close to me!
Anyway, interesting post. I often wonder this myself. I know if I'd married the ex-boyfriend instead of my husband, we'd be divorced by now. I wonder if I'd gone to school for journalism instead of nursing...I'd be a better writer, that's for sure! *LOL*
I am content with the path I have chosen. There are certain moments/decisions I have made that I wish I could "DO OVER" but, luckily, they weren't the major ones.

I can't focus on "do-overs". I get too wrapped up in them, especially when things around here aren't going so well (I argued with my husband this morning=bad mood). I do have some regrets and wonder where my other paths would have taken me. But for the most part I am happy with my life (except today).

Oh I start thinking this way every once in a while. I usually have to stop myself, becuase I start wondering not only about the possibilities but wondering if they would have been better....you know, the grass is always greener...

THat doesn't ever help me so I always have to stop myself. I try to mostly focus on what I have now and on making it the best life can be. But every once in a while...well, I go back and try to imagine all the endings in those choose your own adventure books! lol
